# Function SUM and AVERAGE

One of the basic functions, yet many people are not using. If they know it they could save much work in calculating basic summaries. We are talking about the SUM and AVERAGE – end of counting totals and averages manually.

## SUM description

=SUM(value 1, value 2, … ,value 255)

• values 1 … 255 are cells with the numbers or values for the summary
• for simplification it is used for summary of a range cells, colon symbol that stands for “from .. to”
• example =SUM(A1:A5) … sums range A1 to A5

## AVERAGE description

=AVERAGE(value 1, value 2, … ,value 255)

• values 1 … 255 are cells with the numbers or values for the average
• for simplification it is used for summary of a range cells, colon symbol that stands for “from .. to”
• example =AVERAGE(A1:A5) … average of range A1 to A5

## Inserting a function

The mouse is placed into the cell where we then want to see the result. Function can be found in Excel in several places:

• icon Σ – Autosum on the Home tab
• activate fx button on a formula bar and fill the Functions wizard
• since 2007 version the FORMULA tab and there
• SUM inside math or autosum category
• AVERAGE inside statistical or autosum category

For novice users it is better to use a Functions wizard, which will help it to fill and advises the user as where to write. The resulting formula is then wrote itself into the formula bar.
